417-MarkV-Action-Webcard-710

About the Mark V

The Mark V was a British WWI heavy tank, deployed in 1918 and primarily used in action during the closing months of WWI. The initial intention was for the Mark V to be a completely new design of tank, but parts to craft it didn’t become available in time, so it ended up being an upgraded Mark IV. The Mark V had more power from a new Ricardo engine, and only needed one driver thanks to the new Wilson epicyclical steering gear.

The first tanks arrived in France in May 1918. Four hundred were built, 200 each of Males and Females. The “Males” were armed with 6-pounder guns and machine guns, while the “Females” came with machine guns only. The Mark V was first used in the Battle of Hamel, on the 4th of July 1918. It went on to take part in eight major offensives before the end of the War.

XXX-Action-Webcard-710

About the V-1 Flying Bomb:

The V-1 Flying Bomb was an early cruise missile and the first to use a pulsejet for power. It was developed at Peenemünde Army Research Center by the German Luftwaffe during WWII. Due to its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French and Dutch coasts. At its peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at Southeast England. A total of 9,521 were fired, decreasing in number until the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by allied forces in October 1944.

As part of Operation Crossbow, the British operated an arrangement of air defenses including anti-aircraft guns and fighter aircraft, to intercept the bombs before they reached their targets. During this time, launch sites and underground V-1 storage depots were targets of strategic bombing.

About the X-Craft British Minisub:

The X-Craft was a WWII midget submarine class built for the Royal Navy during 1943-1944. Known individually as X-Craft, the vessels were designed to be towed to their intended area of operations by a full-size ‘mother’ submarine with a passage crew on board.  Once the attack was over, the X-Craft would rendezvous with the towing submarine and then be towed home. Range was limited primarily by the endurance and determination of their crews, but was thought to be up to 14 days in the craft or 1,500 miles.

This specific variant was deployed during September 1943’s Operation Source to neutralize the heavy German warships based in Northern Norway. Six X-craft were used, but only two successfully laid charges; the rest were lost, scuttled or returned to base. This was the only multiple X-craft attack. X-Craft made additional attacks on German targets in Norway and helped survey the beaches for the Allied landings at Normandy.  The remains of two XT-class craft are present on the beach at Aberlady Bay in East Lothian, Scotland. One X24 is available to view at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in the United Kingdom.

About the Panzer VIII Maus:

The Panzer VIII Maus was a German WWII super-heavy tank completed in late 1944. It is the heaviest fully enclosed armored fighting vehicle ever built. Five were originally ordered, but only two hulls and one turret were completed before the testing grounds were captured by the advancing Soviet forces. These two prototypes – one with, and the other without a turret – underwent trials in late 1944. The Maus’ main armament was the Krupp-designed 128 mm KwK 44 L/55 gun, based on the 12.8 cm Pak 44 anti-tank field artillery piece which was used in the casemate-type Jagdiger tank destroyer. The 128 mm gun was powerful enough to destroy all Allied armored fighting vehicles then in service, some at ranges exceeding 3,500 m.

The principle problem in the design of the Maus was developing an engine and drivetrain which was powerful enough to propel the tank, yet small enough to fit inside it. The drive train was electrical, designed to provide a maximum speed of 12 mph and a minimum speed of 0.93 mph. However, during actual field testing the maximum speed achieved on hard surfaces was 8.1 mph with full motor field. The vehicle’s weight made it unable to utilize most bridges, instead it was intended to ford to a depth of 6 ft 7 in, or submerge up to a depth of 26 ft 3 in and use a snorkel to cross rivers. The Maus was intended to punch holes through enemy defenses in the manner of an immense “breakthrough tank”, whilst taking almost no damage to any components. There is a captured Maus prototype on display by the Kubinka Tank Museum in Russia.

Specifications:

  • Number built: 2 (of which 1 incomplete)
  • Weight: 188 tons

April 2017 Hashtag Giveaway

$

4_2017 - SoMe Posts2

Brickmania has decided to run another hashtag social media giveaway event for the entire month! We often receive questions about how it works, and have decided to make a FAQ to answer general questions.

How do I enter the giveaway?

  • On Facebook, share one of our posts to your timeline and insert the hashtag #

#gotterdammerungbricks into the post. Alternatively, make a post on your timeline/wall with the hashtag #gotterdammerungbricks. Note: Unless your Facebook account is set to public, we cannot see a private post on your wall. Additionally, using the hashtag as a comment in one of our posts, does not count. Continued spamming of the hashtag in the same post can disqualify you.

  • On Twitter, tweet using the hashtag #gotterdammerungbricks. Alternatively, retweet one of our posts and use the hashtag #gotterdammerungbricks in your share.
  • On Instagram, make a new image or take a picture and use the hashtag #gotterdammerungbricks. Note, unless your profile/image is public, the post cannot be seen by anyone but you. Keep in mind that spamming/using the hashtag as a comment on one of our images not only does not qualify for an entry, but repeated use can result in disqualification.

Can I enter more than once?

  • Yes, you can enter as many times as you like! It can raise the chance of becoming that week’s winner significantly.

Why does commenting on posts not count?

  • Something that we have learned from past events is that people often comment on our own posts through Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag. This does not count, and repeated use can result in complete disqualification.
  • The purpose of running a hashtag giveaway is to share our content to new people; commenting on Brickmania posts does not share our brand, products, name, etc

What do I get if I win? How will I know if I won?

  • Each week, Brickmania staff will compile a list of everyone who has entered to that point in the month (it is retroactive, so if you entered on January 3rd, later in the month, it will still count)
  • A winner will be selected for each week randomly from one of the three social media networks we are doing the giveaway on. The winner will be contacted through that platform’s Direct Messaging system (it is important that if you want to enter, make sure you have a way to directly communicate with us)
  • When the winner is selected, they will receive a kit (new or restock), which will be sent through the mail straight to their address!
  • Upon selecting a winner, Brickmania staff will produce one post per social media platform announcing the winner to the world!

*These rules can be changed at any time, and Brickmania reserves the right to change and tweak things if needed

The Nebelwerfer, which means “Smoke Thrower”, was a rocket launcher used by the Nebeltruppen. The launcher was portable, packing up to be towed behind a vehicle, with a range of 6,900 metres (7,500 yd) and its 6 barrels could be fired simultaneously. The Nebeltruppen functioned like the US Army’s Chemical Corps, using launchers to throw smoke, poison gas, and explosive weapons into enemy territory. Almost five and a half million 15 cm rockets and six thousand launchers were manufactured over the course of the war. The American soldiers in Sicily named the gun the “Screaming Mimi”, referencing the loud scream-like quality of the incoming artillery.

Additional information about this Brickmania custom Lego® kit:

2130 Katyusha-Action-Webcard-1200

About BM-13N Katyusha – Rocket Launcher:

The Katyusha rocket launchers were a series of multiple rocket artillery built and used by the Soviets in WWII.  This type of artillery was used to deliver explosives to a target area more quickly than conventional artillery, but suffered from lower accuracy and a longer reload time. While relatively fragile when compared to traditional artillery, they were inexpensive, easy to produce and usable on any chassis, usually ordinary trucks.  This high mobility gave the Katyushas an additional advantage: the ability to strike and move before being located and hit with counter-fire.  They were incredibly effective in saturation bombardment, and particularly feared by German soldiers. A battery of four BM-13 launchers could fire a salvo in 7–10 seconds that delivered over 4 tons of high explosives over a 4,300,000 sq ft impact zone, making its power roughly equivalent to that of 72 guns. With an efficient crew, the launchers could redeploy to a new location immediately after firing, denying the enemy the opportunity for retaliation fire. Katyusha batteries were often massed in very large numbers to create a shock effect on enemy forces. The weapon’s disadvantage was the long time it took to reload a launcher, in contrast to conventional guns which could sustain a continuous low rate of fire. This kit is modelled after the BM-13, mounted on Studebaker trucks.  The BM-13 utilized M-13 132mm rockets, and was often mounted on the ZIS-6 truck, an improvised vehicle mount or towed trailer or sled. The M-13s had a max range of 9,560 yards. The scream of the warheads being launched prompted the Germans to nickname the Katyushas “Stalins Organ”. All in all, the Katyusha’s were an incredibly effective “Shock and Awe” weapon.

Additional information about this Brickmania custom Lego® kit:

The BM-13N Katyusha – Rocket Launcher has the following features:

  • 1 Russian mid-war minifigure with BrickArms PPsH
  • Opening hood

New Release: IS-3 Pike – Russian Heavy Tank

$

2144-Action-Webcard-710

Special Offer:

Buy the IS-3 Pike – Russian Heavy Tank by April 10th and get free shipping on your entire order*

*Within the USA free shipping means delivery by the United States Postal Service using First Class Mail (packages up to 8 ounces) and Priority Mail (packages over 8 ounces). Select Countries: Free Economy Mail delivery (4-8 weeks) is also being offered to Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Luxemburg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

About the IS-3 Pike – Russian Heavy Tank:

There are two tanks known as Object 244 and Object 703, that are known as IS-3. Object 244 was an IS-2 rearmed with the long-barreled 85mm cannon and developed by LKZ, which was never series-produced for service use. Object 703 was developed in late 1944 by ChTZ and left the factory shop in May 1945. This tank had an improved armor layout and a semi-hemispherical cast turret, which became the hallmark of post-war Soviet tanks. The IS-3’s pointed prow earned it the nickname “Pike” by its crews. It weighed slightly less and stood 30 cm lower than previous versions. Wartime production resulted in many mechanical problems and a hull weldline that had a tendency to crack open.

The IS-3 came too late to see action in WWII. The first public demonstration of the IS-3 came on September 7, 1945 during the Allied victory parade on Charlottenburger Straße in Berlin, with heavily reinforced 71st Guards Heavy Tank Regiment of the 2nd Guards Tank Army. Starting in 1960, the IS-3 was slightly modernized as the IS-3M, in a manner similar to the IS-2M.

Specifications:

  • Crew: 4
  • Weight: 46.5 tons
  • Armament: 1 x 122 mm D-25T main gun
  • Secondary Armament: 2xDT, DShK
  • Engine: 600 hp V-2-IS

Zis-3 social media

The ZiS-3 76mm Field Gun (Officially designated M1942 Divisional Gun) was the most common medium artillery piece used by the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War. Due to the innovated addition of the massive muzzle brake, pre-war 76mm gun barrels could be mated to the light weight ZiS-2 anti-tank gun carriage. This created a compact, mobile, inexpensive, versatile and easy to produce artillery piece that was called, “A masterpiece of artillery systems design.” by Joseph Stalin. The ZiS-3 gun was the main armament used for the Su-76 self-propelled gun. Most ZiS-3 guns were withdrawn from the Red Army after World War II and were later supplied to satellite states. The ZiS-3 was used by communist forces in both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Restock: Yak-9 Fighter

2127-Action-Webcard-710

About the Yak-9:

The Normandie-Niemen Regiment was a fighter squadron of the French Air Force during WWII. It served on the Eastern Front, and is one of only 3 Western Allied countries to see combat there. Additionally, the Normandie-Nieman was the only Western Allied group to fight with the Soviets until the end of the war in Europe. The unit was formed in mid-1943 when a group of French fighter pilots was sent to aid the Soviet forces on the Eastern Front. Charles de Gaulle (leader of the French Resistance) felt it was important that Frenchmen serve on all fronts of the war.

One of the Planes they used was the Yakolev Yak-9, a single engine fighter aircraft. It was meant to be a lighter version of the Yak-7, while maintaining the same armament. The Yak-9 first saw deployment in late 1942. It’s lighter build, paired with a lowered rear fuselage decking and all-around vision canopy, gave it a higher level of flexibility that the previous models lacked. The Yak-9 was the most mass-produced Soviet fighter of all time. During its production run from 1942 to 1948, over 16,700 were built. The Yak-9 was the first Soviet aircraft to shoot down the formidable Messerschmitt Me 262 jet.

The Normandie-Niemen Regiment used the Yak-9D variant, which sported a 20mm ShVAK cannon with a capacity for 120 rounds, and a 12.7mm UBS machine gun, with 200 rounds. It’s 1,180 hp Klimov M-105 PF V-12 liquid-cooled piston engine would push top speeds of 371 mph at cruising height. It could travel as far as 845 miles with a top altitude of 30,000 feet.
